Trip 1 Day 3

Hello family and friends!

Today was our third day at the site and it proved to be another hard day of work.

We continued hauling more concrete blocks up the hill which makes everyone exhausted, but we pressed on. It was amazing to see the family helping out with carrying the blocks with us. Christian who is 12yrs old was carrying 2 heavy blocks on his back up to the site. Today we added five more layers of the blocks to the house and it is starting to look more and more complete every day. It is a constant process of making mixes of mortar and cement and applying it to each level and filling in the concrete blocks. Not exactly exciting to read about, I understand, but it is exciting for us to see this family's future house coming together. You can see some examples in the pictures.
After coming home and taking some not-so-hot showers, we all went out along with our site leaders Fernando (Chicki) and Abel. We went to a delicious restaurant downtown where there was a pan flute band playing some traditional sounding Central American music. We had a great time and polished off plenty litres of Gallo, the Guatemalan's beer of choice.
The country of Guatemala is beautiful and extremely mountainous. Two enormous volcanoes dominate the landscape. All the streets of Antigua are paved with cobblestones which makes for a bumpy ride in the back of the truck every day on the ride to and from the site. Well we are about to head off to the site this morning so I better run. Thanks for stopping by to see our progress in Guatemala.
